Heel Spur

Heel Spur

Small, bony growths on the heel are called heel spurs. An inflammation of the plantar fascia, the ligament that joins the heel bone to the toe bones, can result in the development of a spur.

Causes

  • Stress on the heel is the cause of heel spurs. Walking on uneven floors, wearing bad shoes, and spending too much time standing up could all be contributing factors. Obesity or flat feet may be the physiological cause.

Symptoms

The majority of people show no symptoms. However, over time, they can cause a muscle or tendon to rub against other bones or tissues, or they might stress on them, breaking down the tissue and resulting in tears, pain, and swelling. Corns and calluses can also be brought on by bone spurs in the foot.

TREATMENTS

Heel spurs can cause pain, but over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen or acetaminophen might help.

When necessary, therapy may involve deep tissue massage or ultrasounds from a physical therapist. Shoulder discomfort or plantar fasciitis may benefit from this.

To lessen discomfort and inflammation in the soft tissues surrounding the bone spur, your doctor could advise administering a corticosteroid injection to the troublesome location.

When osteoarthritis has resulted in significant damage and deformity, bone spurs may be surgically removed or treated as part of a joint replacement or repair procedure.
