Cancer Pain

Cancer Pain

While not all cancer patients have cancer pain, some do. You are more likely to experience pain if your cancer has spread or returned.

Pain from cancer can take many different forms. It may feel scorching, achy, dull, or acute. It may be mild, moderate, severe, intermittent, or continuous. The type of cancer you have, its stage of progression, its location, and your pain threshold all affect how much pain you experience.

The majority of cancer patients experience tolerable pain, and managing your pain is crucial to your course of treatment.

Causes

Cancer itself may be painful. Cancer may cause pain if it invades or kills adjacent tissue.
Additionally, substances that induce discomfort can be released by tumors.
Pain can also be a side effect of cancer treatments like radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery.

SYMPTOMS

Cancer-related pain can be felt in the soft tissues, bones, nerves, and organs.

TREATMENTS

  • The nonprescription analgesics. Prescription-free pain medications may be helpful for mild to moderate pain levels. Aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol, etc.), and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.) are a few examples.
  • Pharmaceuticals made from opium (opioids). Prescription drugs called opioids are used to treat moderate to severe pain. Morphine (Kadian, Ms. Contin, and others) and oxycodone (Oxycontin, Roxicodone, and others) are two examples of opioids.
  • Additional prescription drugs. Other medications, such as steroids, antidepressants, and anti-seizure medications, can also help reduce pain.

Through massage, physical therapy, meditation, hypnosis, and relaxation techniques, some people achieve some degree of pain alleviation.

One method of preventing pain signals from reaching the brain is to perform a nerve block. A numbing agent is injected into or around a nerve during this process.
